New Life Centers’ ‘Heart Project’ Featured in Chicago Sun-Times Through New Mural Painted by Former Participant
New Life Centers recently unveiled a new mural at the New Life Community Church in Humboldt Park, created and painted by artist and former New Life program participant Diamond Galindo. The artwork was commissioned through “The Heart Project,” a New Life Centers initiative that aims to heal and improve the mental health of youth through the arts.
Galindo, also known as Diamond Doodle, was raised in the neighborhood and spent her summers involved in New Life Centers’ youth programming. The mural was commissioned by artist Alecks Cruz and funded by a grant from Rich in Faith.
In speaking with the Chicago Sun-Times, Galindo says the mural is a tribute to her childhood and the children of the neighborhood who find safety and community in their local church.
Galindo says the mural is inspired by the testimonies of New Life alumni who shared stories of connecting with mentors and life-saving resources through their programs.
“I feel like this is my thank you note to [New Life],” said Galindo. “When [Cruz] told me they’re going to do a mural over there, I said, ‘Let’s do this.’ We did this whole mural representing the community, bringing hope and light. They’re a second family in that church.”
